Celestia Amelia Young
Member of Pioneer Family"Following a long illness, Celestia Amelia Young died Sunday morning at her home, 210-01 104th avenue, Bellaire. She was the wife of John C. Young, former associate editor of The Wave, who, at 84, still writes the "Reminiscing " column for The Wave each week.
Mrs. Young was born Jan. 31, 1875 at Inwood to Alfred and Georgianna Bedell. She was a tiny baby when her parents moved to Rockaway Beach, settling in Seaside. Later her father built a home in Bayview avenue (Beach 90th street) which remained in the family until a few years ago.
Mrs. Young was one of the few remaining pupils of the first Sunday School on Rockaway Beach which was held in the home of Mrs. Fanny Holland. Later, when the First Congregational Church was organized, she became one of its members and joined its Ladies Aid Society, when that was formed, retaining her membership throughout her lifetime.
Mr. and Mrs. Young were married June 5, 1895, and after living in Brooklym for two years, moved to Rockaway Beach. Bout 40 years ago they moved to Jamaica and then Bellaire.
Besides her husband, Mrs. Young is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Grace Haggerty of Berkeley. Calif. (an older daughter, Gladys, is deceased); two brothers, Alfred J. Bedell of Tivoli, N.Y., and Willis P. Bedell of Levittown, J.I.; a sister, Mrs. Henry Otten, of Bellaire; a grandson, Alfred Haggerty, and two great-grandson, Steven and James Haggerty, all of Lafayette, Calif.
Funeral services were held last evening in Jamaica by the Rev. Arthur Wells of the Hollis Avenue Congregational Church, Queens Village. Interment was in Evergreen Cemetery, Brooklyn. "
Celestia married John C. YOUNG, son of Christopher and Mary Young, on 5/8 Jun 1895. John was born on 19 Jul 1869 in New York City, New York. He died on 20 Sep 1963 in Bellaire, Queens Village, Queens County, New York. He was buried in the Evergreens Cemetery, Brooklyn, Kings County, New York.
OCCUPATION: John was a newspaper reporter for The Wave of Rockaway Beach, the New York Herald, the New York Tribune, the Sunday World, and the Brooklyn Daily Times.. He also co-founded and published the Argus, a Rockaway newspaper, and later became associate editor of The Wave, 1943-1953. After his retirement at age 84, he continued working as a columnist for The Wave until a few months before his death at age 94.

Araminta Bedell Otten
Daughter of Pioneers
"Mrs. Minnie Otten, the former "Mint" Bedell, died last Friday in Bellaire, where she resided at 210-01 104th avenue.. Her age was 89 years.Mrs. Otten was born in Inwood on September 23, 1876, her parents being Alfred C. and Georgianna Bedell. She was a small child when they settled in Rockaway Beach , when her father, a builder, went to work for the Long Island Rail Road and for years superintended the maintenance of the railroad trestle across Jamaica Bay. Her father also drew the plans for the original building of the First Congregational Church, the first place of worship on Rockaway Beach.
Mrs. Otten attended the Rockaway Beach School, the forerunner of Public School 44. She was a member of the First Congregational Church and for many years was active in its Ladies Aid Society.
She was married to Frank Haentschke and had a son Frank. Both are deceased. Some years after the death of her first husband, Mrs. Haentschke married Henry Otten of Jamaica (in 1941) and resided there for several years befrore moving to Bellaire.
Mrs. Otten is survived by her husband; two brothers, Alfred J. Bedell of Tivoli, N.Y., and Willis P. Bedell of Levittown, L.I. She also leaves a grandson, Frank Haentschke of Pomfort, Md.
The Rev. Egbert Macklin, pastor Emeritus of the Victoria Congregational Church , officiated at funeral services, which were held at Queens Village last Sunday. Interment was made in the family plot in Trinity Churchyard, Hewlett."

His birth date was recorded as April 1867 in the 1900 census, but the birth year on his gravestone is 1865.

8. Charles Benjamin BEDELL (Alfred Curtis , Benjamin P. ) was born on 22 May 1883 in Jamaica, Queens County, New York. He died on 26 Feb 1948 in Rockaway Beach, Queens County, New York. He was buried on 28 Feb 1948 in Rockville Cemetery, Lynbrook, Nassau County, New York.
OCCUPATION: Charles, like his father, worked for the Long Island Rail Road as a bridge carpenter, and was foreman of carpenters who maintained the wooden trestle across Jamaica Bay.

"Charles Benjamin Bedell, a lifelong resident of the Beach, died last Thursday in Rockaway Beach Hospital after an illness of several months. He was taken to the hospital two weeks previous when his condition became grave. His home was 92-11 De Soto and his age was 65.
For 40 years he had been employed by the Long Island Rail Road as a foreman of bridge carpenters on the trestle over Jamaica Bay and other sections of the Island. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Railway Bridge Carpenters and the Volunteer Relief Society, and was well known throughout the community.
Surviving are his wife Agnes; a daughter Mrs. Rowland Seaman of this place; three sisters Mrs. John C. Young, Mrs. Henry Otten, and Mrs. Douglas Coulter, all of Bellaire; two brothers, Alfred J. Bedell of Madalin, N.Y., and Willis P. Bedell of Brooklyn, and four grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Elmer J. Snyder Funeral Parlor, the Rev. Ellsworth T. Richardson of the First Congregational Church officiating. Burial was in Rockville Center cemetery under the direction of Minnie E. Snyder."

"Funeral services were to be held Friday, Jan 12 for Alfred J. Bedell, 93, of Tivoli. He died Tuesday, Jan. 9 at St Francis Hospital, Poughkeepsie after a short illness. He was a retired letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in New York City. Born in Springfield April 8, 1885. he was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Alfred C. Bedell and had lived in Tivoli since 1945. His wife. Frances Slater Bedell, died in April, 1967. Surviving are two sons, Alfred C. Bedell of Kingston and Harold Bedell of Millerton; a daughter, Mrs. Mabel Edwards of Port Richey, Fla.; five grandchildren, and three greatgrandchildren.

Well Known Typographer"Willis Phileo Bedell, of 44 Forge lane, Levittown, died Sunday morning at his residence, following a short illness.
Mr. Bedell, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred C. Bedell, was born May 12, 1891 in Rockaway Beach. After resideing some years in Corning, N.Y. and in Brooklyn, he moved to Levittown in 1950. He had been wih Howard C. Bullard, typographers, since 1919 except for a few years when he was Superintendent of The Wave Printery where, as a boy, he had learned his trade.
He leaves his wife, the former Ella Seinsoth of Brooklyn,; two daughters, Mr.s Shirley Haliniewski of Irvington, N.J., and Mrs. Audrey Sidden of Wantaugh, L.I.; a brother, Alfred, of Tivoli, N.Y., and two grandchildren, Charles and Susan Sidden.
The Rev. Harry Hall of the Community Church of Levittown officiated at the funeral service at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home in Wantaugh. The funeral took place at 12:30 p.m. with interment at Cypress Hills Cemetery,. Brooklyn.."

Y„ were married at the home of the bride's parents at 5 o'clock, Saturday afternoon. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. John C. Green of the First Congregational Church of Rockaway. Miss Lillian Leitz was maid of honor and Francis M. Ferguson was best man.

Last know residence was the Bellaire section of Queens Village, Jamaica, Queens County, New York in 1948. She is not mentioned as in the obituary of her sister Celestia (Bedell) Young in July 1963. No New York City death record has been found. It is said she died of cancer.

[sic, T.] Pinkham and daughter of Mrs. Rowland Seaman, died at 3 o’clock Thursday morning, at the home of her mother, the Colonade Hotel, Sea Side. Mrs. Pinkham was twenty-four years of age and for the greater part of her life was a resident of the Beach. She came down to the Beach early this spring. About two months ago she became ill but no serious results were entertained until about two weeks ago. Then typhoid fever set in and she gradually grew worse. Change for the better occurred last Sunday and hopes for her recovery were entertained, but midnight Wednesday, she had a relapse and passed peaceably away. She leaves a little son six years old to share the sorrow with her husband. Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 1 o’clock in the Congregational Church and interment will be made in Trinity churchyard at Woodmere."

"Robert Ellsworth Jones, of 88-07 Rockaway Beach Boulevard, died at his home yesterday morning at the age of 77 after an illness of four years.
Mr Jones had been a resident of the Rockaways since he was brought here as a child 6 months old. He was a former member of the New York City Fire Department, having retired in 1821 because of a physical disability. He was a member of the Exempt Firemen's Association of the Fifth Ward..
His wife, Anna, nee Martin, a daughter, Mrs. Catherine Lorne and three grandchildren, Catherine Diane, Robert Chris and James Joseph Lorne, jr., of Lynbrook, L.I., survive him.
